The Bio-Based Industries Initiative is a new Public-Private Partnership between EU and the Bio-based Industries Consortium Aisbl aiming at increasing investment in the development of a sustainable bio-based industry sector in Europe. The initiative will run from 2014 to 2020 and its total budget is € 3,675 million, of which the EU will contribute with up to € 975million from Horizon 2020 and € 2.7 billion come from private investments.

The objectives of the initiative are to:
* Demonstrate technologies that enable new chemical building blocks, new materials, and new consumer products from European biomass, which replace the need for fossil-based inputs;
* Develop business models that integrate economic actors along the value chain from supply of biomass to bio-refinery plants to consumers of bio-based materials, chemicals and fuels, including through creating new cross-sector interconnections and supporting cross-industry clusters; and
* Set-up flagship bio-refinery plants that deploy the technologies and business models for bio-based materials, chemicals and fuels and demonstrate cost and performance improvements to levels that are competitive with fossil-based alternatives

Main priorities in the work programme for 2015:
* Cross-sectorial integration along and across value chains,
* Ensuring sufficient and sustainable biomass supply,
* Sustainable increase of productivity and mobilization of biomass through innovations in agriculture and forestry and emerging biomass sources,
* Unlock the potential of side and waste streams,
* Development of biorefinery technologies,
* Full utilisation of biomass and closing the loops,
* Addressing biorefinery technological gaps, and
* Secured market demand and customer awareness.
